The Greenvolt Group is in the final stages of completing the commissioning of a lithium-ion battery storage system at its Mondego Bioelectric Biomass Plant (in PT, Central de Biomassa Biolétrica do Mondego, i.e, “SBM”) in Figueira da Foz, Coimbra.
The project aims to modulate generated power, optimizing the injected power at each moment through innovative “pouch cell” technology. This system, with a capacity of 5MW and an energy storage capacity of 5MWh, includes battery modules, inverters, rectifiers, transformers, HVAC systems, an automatic fire detection and extinguishing system, an energy management system, and a proprietary control system. The battery interacts seamlessly with the Biomass Plant’s control system, enabling automatic management of the available battery charge.
João Andrade, Technical Director of the Greenvolt Group, states that “this project is a testament to our commitment to continuous improvement in the performance of our renewable energy production facilities”.
This 20-month project involved engineering, installation, and commissioning of an energy storage system, seamlessly integrated with the SBM control infrastructure. The system, already showing productivity enhancements, is backed by performance guarantees, and is estimated to have a lifespan exceeding 10 years.
